Chinese Language and Culture - Elementary 1

The course continues to introduce Chinese grammar and encourage students to develop their basic Chinese language proficiency. Exercises for listening, speaking, reading and writing constitute part of the course. After the course, students are able to sit the Chinese proficiency test HSK 3 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi).

Target group

The course is for students who have completed the Chinese Language and Culture beginner 2 course or the study of “New Practical Chinese Reader" Vol. 1, HSK Vol. 2, and who wish to continue learning Chinese. Students whose listening and speaking skills are at an equivalent level are also welcome.

Course aims

After completing the course, students can learn and understand language related to daily settings, use more complex grammatical structures and sentence patterns to communicate on familiar topics through interaction and description; can compose brief passages, take on introductory Chinese cultural knowledge, and acquire preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

Course Contents

  • Recognize and use 350 basic Chinese words/phrases and basic sentence patterns, and use a Chinese dictionary
  • Make correct sentences with the grammar learned from the textbook, and write short letters and essays with instructions
  • Chinese grammar
  • Take part in simple conversations and express personal opinions.

Course literature

The course is based on the textbook “New Practical Chinese Reader” Vol. 2, HSK Vol. 3, and the accompanying exercise books.
